Sergers... a scary word in the world of sewing.  Many of us have sat down at one and attempted to thread it, only to walk away in tears.  Upper loopers, lower loopers, and thread paths are enough to make even an experienced sewer lose their minds. Some horror stories I have heard include:

"I only leave my serger threaded with grey because that is what it came threaded with and I don't know how to change the colors"

"My serger is set up to do a rolled hem and that's the only stitch I know how to make it do"

"I took my serger out of the box one time and couldn't get it to work, so I put it back in and it's sat there ever since."

And these stories are very valid! I mean, just look at a traditional serger's thread path!

There's upper loopers, lower loopers, and usually two different needles to thread without a threader! It's honestly enough to drive anyone crazy.

So when I say "traditional serger", I'm referring to one that makes you go through the difficult task of threading her up.  And even once you're threaded, balancing tensions to make a stitch look beautiful.  Traditional sergers have 4 tension knobs that require you to turn, dial, and adjust to the right numbers in order for the threads to all behave

.

I am SCARED of traditional sergers.

There, I said it out loud. In fact, I have been alive since the invention of "air thread" sergers.  An air thead serger has ports that spit the air through that thread path with ease.

Above is a picture of the Bernina L850.  Notice the red and blue ports to the right of the hand.  Those ports are where you insert the thread, and then like magic, air pushes the thread through the loopers.  This is what we call an AIR THREAD serger or overlocker.

Now - let's up the ease of serging one more level.

Above is a photo of the Bernina L890 - this is the next level in serging and overlocking.  This is a serger you will ACTUALLY USE.  Here are a few reasons why:

1- AIR THREADING! No following a thread path, the air thread mechanism threads this machine for both regular serging AND cover stitch.

2- NO TENSION KNOBS! That's right.  This machine allows you to choose a stitch, and then the machine goes in and makes all of the tension adjustments for you.  No hassle in balancing thread tensions, which is 90% of the battle after you get the machine threaded.

3- ON SCREEN TUTORIALS! This machine walks you through the entire threading process without having to memorize or pull out an instruction book.  It takes all of the guess work out of threading, tension, and more!

I have a video where I thread this machine on YouTube here!

If your serger scares you, come try one that takes all of the hard work and throws it out the window! We have a few spots left in our two day, hands-on workshop coming up September 26-27.

Enroll in our serger event here - we would love to show you just what this machine can do!
